week. It currently incorporates nine additional attractions, including admission to the Exploratorium (see p94), SFMOMA (see pp26 9), the California Academy of Sciences (see pp22 3), and more, and the number of sponsoring attractions is increasing.

Built for San Francisco s archbishop in 1904, this converted wonder is a slice of city history, and has the Alamo Square views that appear on postcards. Free breakfast and evening wine and cheese make it a real treat. Be aware, however, that the neighborhood is rundown. d 1000 Fulton St

Polk Street Historically, the southern anne montague part of this street, known as Polk Gulch, was San Francisco s first openly gay district, before the rise of the Castro in the 1970s (see p107). Since then it has grown shabbier, although it still attracts plenty of younger gays to its clubs, bars, and shops. At the other end, just down from Russian Hill, Polk Street is one of the city s shopping and dining lures, with a host of fine choices to tempt the eyes and palates of a discerning clientele. d Map Q1
